Koufy! Kosta Koufos has eye-catching performance for Nuggets

Things to consider – sometimes coach George Karl doesn’t even have a center on the court in crunch time, for reasons such as matchups or confidence. In Monday’s preseason game, Karl played center Kosta Koufos, who was awesome.

“Kosta did some great stuff to win the game for us,” the coach said. “He made a big block that was as good a play as the two tip-ins at the end of the game, so Kosta made three pivotal plays in the last three minutes of the game, whereas Ty (Lawson) and (Danilo) Gallinari had three turnovers. Solid fundamental plays are key and we almost gave them opportunities to come back in the game.”

In the Pepsi Center preseason win, ol’ Koufy was splendid – he finished six points and a game-high 13 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench (Timofey Mozgov started at center). And EIGHT of his boards were offensive. His offensive rebounds alone would have been good for a game-high in total rebounds.

“He has been solid most of camp,” Karl said earlier this month. “I think he understands what we want out of our big guys, he’s committed to that role, probably more so than some other guys.”

As we all know, the biggest battle in camp is at center. Koufos, Mozzy and JaVale McGee are all battling for minutes. Denver has four more preseason games before the regular season opener on Halloween at the 76ers.
